Grinning Ghosts is an emo nerd punk rock band originating from Orange County, Ca. They released their debut album “Yesterday Tomorrow” in 2015. This was followed up by a triple album, “Youth on the Rack” in 2018. In 2019, primary songwriter and vocalist Daryl Blake was joined by Luke Johnson on drums, Gus Puga on bass, and Joseph Melendez on guitar to record a live album: “Live At Practice”.

Unhappy with the studio versions of several of his songs, and to document the live show experience of the band, Daryl Blake made plans to record a live album in May of 2019. Unfortunately, due to personal and creative differences, Daryl Blake and other co-founding member Thomas Puckett decided to part ways. The then line up of the band was dissolved.

Daryl recruited members from his anti-folk rock americana project to be the new rhythm section of Grinning Ghosts. These were Luke Johnson from Roosterhead on drums and Gus Puga from Lindsay B and Pelo Grande on bass. Joseph, from Thee Azmatics, completed the four piece on lead guitar.

With this new line up, the frame of the project drifted from a live show recording to capturing a practice. “I thought this would be a novel and interesting take on the Live Album,” said Blake. The four of them gathered at Gadget Pelt Laboratories, Luke’s recording studio in Inglewood, Ca, to capture this foursome playing these songs together for the first time. “Honestly, these guys are too good. Grinning Ghosts was a very sloppy band. It was more authentic this way. If we’d rehearsed and set up a show and then recorded the show, it would have been too good. This way was more like a real, classic GG show,” said Blake, “nobody really knew what they were doing.”

Grinning Ghosts are currently recording a double EP to be released later this year.
